Most curriculum guides can only be used as pacing guides, and not as a tool to actually teach children. However, the Tailored Learning Curriculum Guide is not like most! It not only includes standards, so you will know which skill to focus on each week, but also includes essential questions, vocabulary, and daily activities to help teach EVERY standard/skill for EVERY subject. For example, the curriculum guide for ages 3 to 7 includes essential questions, vocabulary, and daily activities that can be used to teach language/reading, math, science, social studies, and character education, as well as other standards. Thus, this resource can be used as a lesson plan and guide to not only teach a child every subject and skill they need to learn, but also teach additional skills as well! In addition to a user-friendly format that can be used to teach children every day, each guide also includes weekly recommendations of skills that can be used to push students further than what is required at their age level. In short, this is an educational resource developed by a certified teacher, that can be used to not only teach children daily, but help them grow!
Another great aspect of each curriculum guide is that it is NOT a one-size- fits-all resource! It can be used to teach students who are on level, behind level, need help on a specific skill or standard, or help students advance beyond grade level. Even though the curriculum is set up to be used for thirty-six weeks or an entire school year, a student can move through the weeks as quickly or as slowly as he/she needs to. If you only want your child to work three days out of a week, you can choose three days of lessons out of the five days that go along with each skill. On the other hand, if you want a guide and hands-on activities for your child to follow five days a week, the five days of lessons are there for you. Sometimes a child might grasp one standard/skill quicker or slower than another standard/skill. As a result, it is okay if you have to work on a specific standard for more than one week. It is also okay to move on to another standard or skill before the week is over if your child shows mastery early. As long as your child is working hard and trying every week, you can move through the weeks at your child’s pace!
Weekly recommendations of phonics or phonological awareness, sight word, number sense, and writing skills are also included in each curriculum guide. The purpose of the weekly recommendations is to not only recommend skills that will push your child further than what is required at his/her age, but teach lifelong learning skills. As a result, students will most likely work on each skill listed under weekly recommendations for more than one week. You can assess whether or not your child is ready to move on from the skills at the end of every two weeks. If he/she is not ready to move on, keep practicing the same weekly skills until your child has reached mastery. Mastery of each skill is key before moving on, because each activity builds upon the activity from the week before. Only continue advancing through the weekly skills when your child is ready!
Remember, this curriculum guide differs from others, because it can be used to guide you through teaching EVERY subject at your child’s level EVERY DAY. It is also designed with the purpose of pushing your child further than age level requirements. With over thirteen years of experience in education, I have learned that with the right tools and high expectations, children can excel far beyond what is traditionally expected at their age and grade level. On the other hand, since you can allow your child to move at his/her own pace, this resource can also be used to help support any child that is behind or has not learned any of the skills listed. Again, this is NOT a one-size-fits-all resource! Nothing in education is, nor should be!
Another benefit of the Tailored Learning Curriculum Guide, is that it comes with optional reading and math benchmark assessments that can be administered at the beginning and end of every nine weeks, as an extra resource. Using these assessments as a pretest to assess what a child already knows about the standards, and then as a posttest to assess what a child learned is one way to truly assess growth. Each nine week assessment assesses all the standards taught during the previous eight weeks, and also includes a notes section for parents to take notes about any standards that need to be retaught or practiced while grading the assessment. The week that the tested standards were taught is included in each notes section, to make it easier for the person grading the assessment to distinguish which standards have been mastered and which still need to be retaught or practiced. In addition, each nine week assessment also comes with charts for parents to use to assess and keep track of which weekly skills were mastered and which still need to be practiced. Again, these assessments are completely optional, and can be used as an extra resource to assess growth.
If the entire curriculum is bought as a thirty-six week bundle, every nine weeks is set up so that students learn new skills for the first seven weeks, review those skills for the eighth week, and then take a benchmark assessment over them during the ninth week. This setup gives parents the flexibility of having a two week period that can be used to help students practice any skills that they previously struggled on, catch up if they had to spend more than one week on a skill, or work more on the weekly skills recommendations. The reading and math assessments can also be purchased separately for parents who purchase resources by week or subject, instead of in bundles.
Happy teaching and learning!
Sight words are included as a weekly recommendation in each curriculum guide, because it is an essential tool to learning how to read. I started working with my daughter, Taylor, on Fry's sight words at the age of four, and by the time she started kindergarten she already knew 115 sight words and had started reading! See Taylor recite her first 115 sight words at the age of five in the video above!
Number sense activities are included as a weekly recommendation in each curriculum guide; because building number sense is vital to being able to understand number relationships, operations involving numbers, and how to calculate math mentally. I started building Taylor's relationship with numbers early, and by the age of four she could already count to 100 by ones, fives, and tens! See Taylor count by fives and tens at the age of four in the video above!
A weekly recommendation for what order and pace students should follow when working on phonics and phonological awareness is included in each curriculum guide. This order is what I used to help Taylor start reading at the beginning of kindergarten, and advance to the amazing reader that she is now. The video above shows her growth, in just a year, from working on sight words (in the first video) to actually being able to read advanced level books as a beginning first grader.
